A small bathroom is the hardest room to furnish: every centimetre counts, and the furniture has to withstand moisture a living room would never have to deal with. Three things decide whether a new cabinet will earn its spot or get in the way.
Width first
Before picking a model, measure the real clear distance between the walls or fixtures — do not rely on "it looks about right". For a bathroom under 4 m², a cabinet 40–50 cm wide is usually the most practical choice; anything over 60 cm tends to block a door swing or access to the toilet.
Moisture-resistant material
A bathroom is a room with constant humidity, so panels made of ordinary chipboard swell and warp over time. Look for furniture labelled water-resistant (usually a PVC or lacquered finish, or moisture-resistant MDF), especially for cabinets under the basin, where water splashes are unavoidable.
Storage space, not just display
Open shelves look good in a photo, but in a small bathroom they fill up fast with bottles and become hard to keep clean. A closed cabinet with one or two drawers usually stores more and keeps the room looking tidy — and a deep drawer under the basin beats a door with shelving inside it.
The short checklist before you buy
- Measure the clear width with a 2–3 cm allowance for installation.
- Check that the material is labelled moisture-resistant.
- Prefer closed storage over open shelving.
- Check the door-swing direction against the bathroom door.
